A Death in White Bear Lake
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Ballantine Books (28 November, 2000)
Average review score:

A brutal murder of a child that went unpunnished for 22 yrs
Living in White BearI have lived in White Bear all of my life. My parents grew up there. We all attended classes in the "new" high school that is talked about. My aunt was in that school's first graduating class in 1965. I say this because, horrifying as the Dennis Jurgens case may be, it is not hard to see how it happened. Even today, it is a small community where most everybody knows everybody else. My family often attended holidays at the Zerwas home, and even today they find it hard to speak ill of Lois. This book does a wonderful job of telling what so many people have been trying to keep quiet for so many years. This is a story that needs to be told in order to make sure that it never happens to another child. Siegel does an excellent job of projecting the difficulty of following up a 20 year old crime that nobody would admit was committed. This is a powerful story that will make you look at child abuse in a whole new way.
A stellar performanceA stellar performance on the part of Barry Siegel and Peter Borland. The detail, history, and character development are exquisitely attended and because of that the writer's talent has created a smooth and clear and compelling flow of the story, when it could have been quite muddled. I am a voracious reader and prefer nonfiction to fiction. This is one of the best. Thanks, Mr. Siegel. More. More. Do it again!

The Animator's Workbook
Published in Paperback by Watson-Guptill Pubns (September, 1988)
Average review score:

Great for computer animators tooI first stumbled upon this book when I was learning to do character animation with a 3D computer program. I found that I could learn the principles easily by doing the exercises in the book with my 3D software. Now I teach character animation, and I use Tony's section on the walk cycle to teach students how to do it in 3D. The book is clear and easy to understand, there are lots and lots of illustrations, and the price is great. If you want to learn character animation in 3D and you know little or nothing about it, this is THE book to get. It contains all the principles you'll find in higher-priced books on digital character animation.
The Animator's Workbook is Outstanding! If you are an animator or a wanna-be animator, this book is for you! It is very good. Easy to read and has lots of pictures that go along with the steps. Learn to animate a walk, a run, anticipation, etc etc etc. This is for drawn animation, but I have found it to work great with Computer Animation. If you wanna learn to animate your characters realisticly get this book
Excellent BookThis is the book that all animator's should buy. It contains all the valuable information. Step by step of classical animation. With the using for the drawing boards, and principles of animations. If you are hesitating, don't! Just buy it and you will love this book. I bet!

Taylor's Guide to Orchids : More Than 300 Orchids, Photographed and Described, for Beginning to Expert Gardeners
Published in Hardcover by Houghton Mifflin Co (May, 1996)
Average review score:

The best Orchid book aroundIf you just got your first Orchid and want to learn how to care for it or you've been collecting for years, this is a "MUST HAVE" book. I have many Orchid books and none come close to this one for readability and useful information. The photos are also wonderful. The person I bought many of my Orchids from carries this book in her back pocket and despite being incredibly knowledgeable, refers to it several times ever day. You can't go wrong buying this book.
A highly informative reference with beautiful illustrationsThis nearly 400-page guide to orchids is one of the best resources I have ever read and used. It is also extremely handy as it is a nice compact size. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful with excellent description(s) alongside. It covers the entire spectre of orchid growing & care, along with many helpful suggestions not normally found in orchid books, such as natural pest control. Even "species nuts" will find Taylor's Guide to be quite useful. In summation, I would just say that this is the best all-round orchid book I have ever read and still use regularly. Thank you, Judy White.
If you get only one, make it this one! This book is what quelled my fears about orchid care. It covers every aspect of orchid growing, and though I do own other orchid books, this book still outranks all the others. Beginners and advanced orchid enthusiasts can both understand and utilize the information in this book. The pest control chapter is informative, and clearly explains the different applications you can use to prevent pests. For a general reference book, this is the apex of orchid information.

Herbal Drugstore
Published in Paperback by Rodale Press (April, 2003)
Average review score:

Great Comparative Reference by M.D.This book finally discusses the use of herbs and roots from an authoritative point of view. It compares common herbs to prescription medications, with an analysis of the ailment and each type of remedy. The authors and editorial staff have formal training from conventional medical schools and were able to do an actual comparative analysis of "natural herbal remedies" to over the counter and prescribed medications, for various common ailments. The book is well organized by malady, with an excellent reference guide for purchasing products and information on associations, and additional publications of interest. Good reading, very helpful.
Excellent medical reference book! This is a thorough book that includes information about possible interactions between herbal remedies and prescription drugs.
Uniquely worth havingI looked at this book not expecting to get hooked and actually pay for it--I was sure it would be redundant (my mother and I both seem to have a weakness for these Rodale books, and--well, on a modest scale--we have amassed a library of them!). But I was disappointed to learn that this book is uniquely useful and informative in ways the other Rodale books don't overlap--in ways that I don't even think having access to the Internet, and its information on herbs, could conveniently replace. It's well laid out, too--you can access the herbal information you're looking for in a number of ways. Sighhhh. I'm afraid it's a keeper.

Snow White Lies
Published in Paperback by Four Seasons Publishers (01 May, 2003)
Average review score:

Well written and developedIts hard to believe this a debut novel. The detailed plot and clean writing style makes this political thriller an excellent read. More importantly, Mr. Miller takes the time to develop the characters and story to allow the reader to really get to into the action and intrigue. I'm already looking forward to his next novel.
Recommended! What a read! Nice tempo and character development, carefully researched, and quite frankly hard to put down. On a number of levels, there is quite a lot here. Peppered throughout with thoughtful political insight, one would have to be unconscious not to recognize a number of past and present political figures (from both sides of the aisle), complete with their strengths, weaknesses, and not insignificant personal flaws. On that last note, and excepting the quite corrupt bad apples Miller examines in depth, the work is very thought provoking on what we expect from our elected officials. Suggestions abound that perhaps we don't demand enough in some areas, and at the same time have unreasonable expectations in other areas. I thoroughly enjoyed Miller's treatment of Dan Henry and his journey, his private demons, his renewal, and his . . . . . . well, you have to read it yourself! I anxiously await another effort from Miller.
Snow White LiesAn engrossing, fast-paced tale of politics, ambition, suspense, love lost and found, rebirth and redemption. The depth of plot and characters - including their symbolism to recent political figures - was such that I felt transported to the various venues that Mr. Miller described so succinctly. Dan Henry's determination was unyielding. This was a tough one to put down, taking me well into the late night. Hard to believe this was the first novel for Mr. Miller - great summer reading!

The Machine Gunners (Dramascripts Contemporary Plays)

Wow!I had had this book for about 2 years before even thinking of picking it up and when I did I read it in under half a day. It kept a constant grip on my imagination (mind you I am very interested in all sorts of aircraft) A GREAT READ!
Evocative Novel of Wartime Britain, for Children and AdultsI first read Westall's book as a youngster twenty years ago, and again as an adult just recently. I must say the book has withstood the test of time, and my own growing up -- I'm not sure if I enjoyed it more as a boy or as an adult! I recommend this book most highly, as well as Westall's [apparently out-of-print] "The Devil on the Road".
a 1st class childs view on war torn britain.as previous reviews have mentioned, this is a first rate novel from one of britain top childrens authors, now sadly deceased. It highlights some of Westall's own experiences in war torn tyne and wear - an idea born from his own son (who many of Westall's books are based on - in memorium), when asked by him to stop a leaking roof on the den/base his son and friends had built. Westall states that he felt extremely priveliged to have been invited into their secret world.(hence the den in the book). a very detailed account for those interested in ww2 britain - right down to shrapnel collections found under hedges, to chrysanthemums for christmas. an excellent read, and a book adopted by many schools for english tutoring. This is his best and first book, but try secret lovers, a collection of short stories, and in particular Blind Bill.

MAP: The Co-Creative White Brotherhood Medical Assistance Program
Published in Paperback by Perelandra Ltd (April, 1994)
Average review score:

Complements ReikiI used MAP several years ago before learning Reiki and now that I am a Reiki Master I have been led to use the MAP again when I found this book in my closet a couple of weeks ago. The results are much more powerful this time around since I can now feel the energy working in various locations and energetic levels of my body. The connection with my MAP team, the source, nature, and my higher self is so clear. I'm receiving messages of guidance and support for emotional, mental, spiritual healing as well as physical healing. I was having problems with my ears and sinuses being clogged but immediately after using MAP, they opened up. I invoke the Reiki energy with it now but do not use essences as that is not necessary for MAP to work. Some may say that this is the Reiki working, but I am convinced that it is both, with the coning setting a clear intent for the healing energies to work. Being able to open and close the coning and select the members of my MAP team is a way of being responsible for my own healing. The ritual in Reiki is sacred, special and reverent, no different than the ritual of MAP. Thanks for this opportunity to comment.
easy, wonderful, and it works!!I have been using MAP since 1995. In the early years
I used the healing sessions to heal some major things-
and I mean major. I am a fully qualified and trained and
experienced healer in many modalities, and healing is
my professional work. MAP is incredible, and this book
very clearly and precisely puts the information into
the hands of any sincere seeker. It is in no way difficult
(or ritualistic, as someone suggested), and after a short time,
it a snap to work with. While I have found essences to
be helpful, it is truly not necessary to have a set to
benefit from MAP. Just buy the book, read it well, and
begin. Chapter four tells all you need to know, and the
rest is extremely informative. You may or may not wish
to work with essences at a later time.
I use MAP professionally at times, and have found it very
helpful to assist in keeping me focused during a long day
of healing appointments with clients. Whatever their
background, the clients notice the work is deeper. One
needs not discuss MAP with clients, or anyone for that
matter for it to work. One need not "believe"- however
it is co creative work, and you must participate rather
than passively awaiting for everything to happen. The
book explains all this.
This book is a gift from the Universe, a truy positive gift
of love and healing, and I suggest it wholeheartedly for
the way it is written and given to us, the readers, and
beneficiaries. Thank you, Machaelle!

My testimonyI came to MAP over four years ago and have used the program regularly ever since. There is nothing mysterious or complicated about it. You need not use the Perelandra essences (as another reviewer said), that is stated clearly in the book. You need not even believe in it. I know how skeptical one can be about such things that don't fit neatly into our belief system. I had a very rare and agressive cancer, few people survive it. With the assistance of MAP and my willingness to address my issues, I am today completely cancer-free and healthy. MAP is a holistic program that recognizes the effects of imbalance on health and maintains the balance of all of our bodies: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. The program is useful for such common maladies as headaches, colds, allergies. Nothing is too large or small to bring to MAP. It is empowering as well, and puts your health in your hands. Other than the cost of the book.. it's free... no appointments to make... no driving... You can set your own schedule and do this in the privacy of your home. MAP will work in conjunction with any other medical modality, so there's no need to discard the treatments you may already be involved in (ie: doctors, acupuncture, reiki, homeopathy). I advise anyone with health issues, major or minor or anyone interested in maintaining their health to investigate MAP.

Aggressive Whitetail Hunting
Published in Paperback by Krause Publications (February, 1995)
Average review score:

Aggressive Whitetail HuntingThis is a very informative book. I especially like the section on rub-lines and how Greg clears up misconceptions about scrapes and rubs (and rub-lines). I think the chapter on rub-lines is the most important. There is alot to learn in the rest of the book. E.g. chapters on hunting small tracts of land and performing "small" drives. If you want more information on rub-lines, check out Greg Miller's "Rub-Line Secrets" -- that one is a 5 star book.
The best book on Whitetails hunting I have ever readGreg's passion for whitetails and his knowledge and experience are quite moving in this hard to put down book. I have read many books on hunting the whitetail, and none come close to delivering the way this book does. I was particularly intrigued by Greg's strategies and ideas concerning rub-lines. I also liked the fact that Greg is not a professional hunter but a guy with a regular job and regular responsibilities. This made the book a better read, as I felt Greg could more easily relate specific strategies to meet my needs. He didn't dissapoint!
Improve Your Results With Aggrssive Whitetail HuntingAggressive Whitetail Hunting is a superior book on hunting trophy whitetails. Frankly, I'm tired of books were the authors spend 200 pages telling me how great they are by recounting their exploits on fully guided hunts in hunting preserves.
Greg Miller is a true outdoorsman who hunts on public land and small farms in Wisconsin. His helpful tips, especially on hunting rublines are sure to make you a better hunter. As someone who must hunt heavily pressured public land I figured I would have to use Aggressvie Whitetail strategies to be successful. I applied the lessons learned in this book and bagged a nice eight point buck on public land.
If your a begginer, or someone who wants to bag a bigger buck this is the book for you.

DRY WHITE SEASON
Published in Paperback by Vintage/Ebury (A Division of Random House Group) ()
Average review score:

Drama novel"Une saison blanche et sèche" is a book written in 1979 by André Brink who had been prohibited from publishing it, in South Africa. On the face of it,it's a very full novel, built on a fascinating intrigue which leads to fundamental problems in the country of apartheid:individual liberty; the difficulty in communicating between the black and white races, and between the social classes;... It's a tragic but touching book which describes the realism in life for the apartheid in South Africa.
A TRUE TO LIFE NOVELAndré Brink's novel, A Dry White Season, is a captivating, yet realistic tale about the unfair treatment of blacks in Johannesburg, South Africa. I found it to be an excellent read because of how Brink is in touch with reality. He has his readers ponder a true-to-life question, an ongoing question about racism. Ben Du Toit, the protagonist, finds the deaths of his African-American friend, Gordon Ngubene, and Gordon's son, Jonathan, to be unusual. Both deaths appeared to be caused and covered up by the government. Ben spends his entire life in hopes of uncovering the truth behind these two mysterious deaths. Were they treated unjustly because they were black? This is the question that Ben solves throughout the novel and unfortunately, his quest draws him away from his family and friends. In the end, Ben, living in complete isolation and sadness, discovers that his country is unfair. He triumphs, however, because he is no longer ignorant of his country's behavior. This novel relates to us because we are well aware of racism and injustice. It is very true that Ben's family would leave him if he did not spend time with them. Brink did not falsify the truth with a happy ending but instead allowed the reader to feel Ben's loneliness.
Brink exposes the chilling nature of the apartheid systemAndre Brink,a white South African novelist, indicts the murderous intent of the apartheid system and how one man with his whole life invested in it finally comes to realize the true nature of the system after his black worker is killed. He shows us how once the truth is exposed this man's whole life is dramatically changed and profiles his struggles in tyring to confront the state apparatus. This story is a must read for anyone seeking to understand the political and racial climate of pre-Independence South Africa and the social dynamics that conspired to maintain the status quo of the day
